The 1960s were a decade of revolt: artists politicised themselves and made provocative statements with their works. The 1960s and 70s were also a particularly productive and innovative phase in art. With “ZERO, Pop and Minimal – The 1960s and 1970s”, the Von der Heydt Museum programmatically directs its gaze to its own collection and its own history at a particularly fertile moment.

The exhibition highlights exciting aspects and currents of an era that was only shown in small sections at the Von der Heydt Museum in past decades, but which still has a great influence on current art: In addition to Pop, ZERO and Minimal, conceptual art, art in public space, performances and photography, which became “socially acceptable” during this period, are all worthy of mention.
The protagonists of this period were local, but also international artists, who were presented to the public in the local museum at that time without the aura of “assured value”. It was not until the art market began to form at the end of the 1960s that names such as Gerhard Richter, Nicolas Schöffer and George Segal, all of whom have been represented in the Wuppertal museum collection as early acquisitions since the 1960s, became world-famous. The show thus invites visitors to encounter high-ranking works by internationally renowned artists and at the same time enables them to rediscover numerous lesser-known positions that are worth reassessing.
