Kiri Dalena

The Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) presents the first survey exhibition of the filmmaker and activist Kiri Dalena in Europe. Dalena’s documentary style is characterised by a special closeness to her protagonists: The artist has been campaigning for the protection of human rights in the Philippines for over 20 years. She addresses state persecution, political injustice and social inequality in her home country and emphasises the importance of civil and artistic protest. In an examination of past and present regimes and the active discrimination of population groups, she develops installations, photographic and video works that emphasise suffering and resistance in equal measure.

The exhibition at n.b.k. brings together numerous works by Dalena that not least familiarise viewers with the political history of the Philippines: The artist documents the concrete challenges that her country has faced and continues to face as a result of tyranny, mismanagement and the climate crisis. Above all, she gives a voice to those who defend themselves against injustice through forms of accusation, solidarity and public resistance. With her focus on the cohesion of those affected and echoes of musical and indigenous traditions, she refers to methods of collective preservation and healing.

Weitere Ausstellungsbeteiligungen u. a.: Blaffer Art Museum, Houston (2024); Ateneo Art Gallery, Manila (2023; 2019; 2013); National Gallery Singapore (2022); Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, Köln (2021); Asia Culture Center, Gwangju (2020); Power Station of Art, Shanghai (2018); Facultad de Artes ASAB, Bogotá (2017); The National Art Center, Mori Art Museum, Tokio (2017); Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipeh (2017); National Museum of Art, Osaka (2015). Dalena engagiert sich auch in kollektiven Zusammenhängen, wie dem von ihr mitgegründeten Filmkollektiv Southern Tagalog Exposure (2001–2008) und RESBAK (Respond and Break the Silence Against the Killings; 2016–heute).

Alicja Rogalska

Alicja Rogalska designs collective situations – including workshops, performances, communal dinners, live role-playing games (LARP) or board game meetings – whose course and outcome are subject to collective negotiation. The artist specifically invites people from certain communities to enter into dialogue with each other, make their social position heard and develop emancipatory approaches for the future together. The meetings are often translated into video works, but can also produce songs, images or objects that take account of the collective process.

Rogalska often works with people from precarious economic and political contexts, such as migrant farm workers in the UK, street singers in Jakarta or flower farmers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Rogalska also involves activists, lawyers and researchers in projects to investigate social inequalities with a focus on labour, migration, gender, climate and rural areas. In her current works, Rogalska stages utopian scenarios and opens up speculative spaces for future designs that overcome isolation and exploitation.
