Mar’a’yeh: A Night’s Journey – Künstlerhaus Bethanien | 08.11.-08.12.2024

Editors’ Choice

Mar’a’yeh. Marayeh (مرايه), the Levantine-Arabic word for mirror, contains the Hebrew word with the same meaning: Mar’a (מַראָה). This residency invites artists of Jewish and Muslim origin to a year of exchange, discussion and joint creation. Together, the fellows will immerse themselves in the world of Jewish and Islamic texts, which serve as a source of inspiration for art, dialogue and criticism. A space for Muslim-Jewish exchange in which a group of scholars, academics, social workers and artists from both religions and cultures will come together at Künstlerhaus Bethanien from Friday, 8 November 2024 to provide intellectual input and criticism of the current situation.

The annual theme, Night, is the focal point for study, conversation and creation. Mar’a’yeh-Fellows explore the theme of Night in the Jewish and Islamic canons and in the lives of creatives. They look at how and why Night anchors, liberates, and terrifies us. Through a study of evocative stories of epic nights from Islamic and Jewish scriptural heritage, they examine the mystery of Night with its fantasies, eroticism, and mysticism that often dissipate at dawn. Sessions are led by alternating pairs of Jewish and Muslim scholars juxtapose Jewish and Islamic texts to explore the plurality of lived Muslimness and Jewishness, enabling scrutiny of one’s own traditions and gaining familiarity with those of others.

The Marayeh, Mar’a on the wall reflects the weaknesses and beauty and at the same time reveals the complexity and difficulties of the human experience. Mar’a’yeh aims to question the perception of being Jewish and Muslim in German society, to stimulate dialog and ultimately promote empathy.
