On Friday, 18 March 2022 at 9 pm, the late-night event From the Ambush: Power to Peace! will take place in the Tischlerei of the Deutsche Oper Berlin – two days before the premiere of Giuseppe Verdi’s LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES, one of the great liberation operas of the 19th century. The special edition of the late-night series “From the Ambush” is organised in cooperation with Europe Calling e.V. and the magazine Osteuropa on the occasion of the war in Ukraine under the motto Power to Peace! It can also be visited online and interactively designed.

Curator and director Elia Rediger invites you to an evening defined by contrast: between peace action, cultural exchange and political science discourse. Between art that is able to comfort with words and sounds and current figures and assessments of the brutal reality of war.
“Please no hollow solidarity, no cheap sympathy”, was the first request of the requested participants for this evening. A terrible war is raging in Ukraine. “Make peace!” – is one big cry across Europe, but it goes unanswered.
Well-known political scientists Dr Volker Weichsel (Zeitschrift Osteuropa), Sabine Fischer (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, Berlin) and Andreas Umland (Institute for International Relations, Stockholm) have been invited for a discussion. The international ensemble Polýnushka, which explores and brings to life the musical culture of Ukrainian and Russian folklore, whose roots lie in pre-Christian customs, will be the musical guest. And Maritina Tampakopoulos and Valyntyn Dytiuk from the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin will draw a bridge to the music of the freedom composer Verdi with excerpts from LES VEPRES SICILIENNES.
