Since 24 February 2024, the disused Stadtbad Lichtenberg in Berlin has been transformed into a venue that appeals to lovers of digital art and history buffs alike. The 96-year-old former swimming pool is currently being re-staged and made accessible through a collaboration with over 30 international artists. Addendum: From 23 May, the exhibition will also be open on Thursdays and Fridays. On 6 June, a 4 m² mechanical illusion artwork will be added, and from 13 June, a 220 m² artwork will be on display in the large indoor swimming pool.

The exhibition Stadtbad RELOADED offers visitors to Stadtbad Lichtenberg the opportunity to explore the former premises of the swimming pool in a new way until mid-May. From the former women’s swimming pool to the changing rooms and the historic staircases, the Stadtbad Lichtenberg will be filled with digital art by over 30 artists and collectives. These artworks are not simply abstract images, nor are they AI-generated. The man-made digital art in dialogue with the almost 100-year-old bath architecture creates a symbiosis of history and state-of-the-art technology. Over 150 digital artworks by around 30 international artists and art collectives are presented on a total of 157 video frames.
The exhibition also offers two different atmospheres that change depending on the daylight and weather conditions. On sunny days, the focus is on the harmonious combination of art and architecture, while on cloudy days, the screens seem to float in space and create a magical, mystical atmosphere.
It is recommended to arrive at sunset to experience both light moods. The times of the daily shifting sunset (including the time change to summer time) are listed on the organiser’s website in the ticket section (see link below).
The use of high-quality “3D Loop Art” is particularly noteworthy. The combination of historical elements of the swimming pool with state-of-the-art digital art creates an experience that impresses on different levels. Viewing the art in combination with glimpses into part of the rooms of the Lichtenberg municipal swimming pool creates an almost immersive overall experience.

The Stadtbad Lichtenberg
The Stadtbad Lichtenberg (municipal baths), also known as the Hubertusbad, opened in 1928. It was built as a multi-unit cubic structure in the Expressionist style with, according to the ideas of the time, very modern facilities: medical baths, a Russian-Roman section as a sauna area with warm and hot air rooms, massage cabins and a shower room with a cold water pool, a large water exchange tank in the basement, which allowed the water in the pools to be cleaned quickly, one free-form swimming pool for women (20 metres) and one for men (25 metres), tub and shower sections, galleries to the swimming halls, a gymnastics hall, areas for physiotherapy treatments, a sun terrace and a lift.

In 1991, the Stadtbad Lichtenberg was closed due to construction defects and a lack of funds. The building is a listed building. It is currently managed by BIM Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH and is open for temporary use. There is a lot to see and discover in the Stadtbad Lichtenberg, but not everything is accessible for safety reasons.
