The Berlin gallery Dittrich + Schlechtriem is presenting the performance “The Cards You Were Dealt” by artist Monty Richthofen from 22 February to 24 February 2024. Richthofen will create a body intervention in which he explores the ideas of freedom of choice, dialogue across generational boundaries and transformation through tattooing. Participants will be selected at random.

In the ongoing project, the selected participant will be presented with three texts that deal with phenomena of the 21st century. If they agree to have one of the texts tattooed, they can then choose three other texts for the next participant. The arrangement and design of the text will be decided together with the artist. The aim is a coherent text work, a physical cadavre exquis, which is created through a unique concatenation of decisions and their consequences and in which our own unique experiences, which are at the same time interwoven with those of others, resonate. The performance is captured by the artist in photographs and videos.
Visitors are invited to register as participants at the gallery from Friday 16 February. The participants will be drawn by lot on 22 February at 7 pm sharp; they must be present and available for a tattoo on the performance days. The event and participation are free of charge.
THE CARDS YOU WERE DEALT was first realised in September 2023 and was most recently part of Gallery Weekend Berlin 2023.
