In order to provide a first-hand encounter with the art of photography and its scene again, photo basel/berlin will be hosting a whole series of exhibitors in Hangar 3-4 of Berlin-Tempelhof Airport from 10 to 13 September 2020. The Swiss fair follows an invitation from POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair, which this year opens for the first time at the same time as paper positions berlin at Tempelhof Airport in Berlin. The fairs are an official part of the Berlin Art Week, which is taking place simultaneously with the Berlin Gallery Weekend 2020 and the Berlin Biennale in this special year.

“As trade fair organisers, we are extremely pleased about this cooperation, which enables our exhibitors and the artists they represent to take part in what is probably the most important art event this autumn,” says Sven Eisenhut, Director of photo basel. 23 international galleries from 10 nations will show around 200 photographic positions of 45 artists. Among them are, for example, the works of Canadian artist Edward Burtynsky (Galerie Springer), which were created during the lockdown, the series by Australian artist Sophie Gabrielle (Galerie &Co119) “Worry For the Fruit the Birds Won’t Eat”, with which she won the FOAM Talent Award. The young gallery “Chrysalid” from Rotterdam will show an experimental solo show by the conceptual artist Rabin Huissen, the Berlin-based gallery Katharina Maria Raab will present a duo show by the artists Ahmed Kamel and Hicham Benohoud and the Bildhalle from Zurich will show works by the Swiss artist Douglas Mandry and the Magnum photographer Werner Bischof.

To round off the fair thematically, a small curated special exhibition on navigation will be shown. The winners of the CAP Prize 2019 (CAP = Contemporary African Photography) – which will be shown in a monumental special exhibition under the main roof of Tempelhof Airport – will also be on show as guests in a special exhibition. The winners of the Cap Prize 2020 will also be announced on Saturday, 12.09, at photo basel/berlin and POSITIONS.

Since its launch in summer 2015, photo basel has been on an upward trend and is now one of the most important photo art fairs in the world. photo basel sees itself as a mediator between art collectors, curators, gallery owners and artists. It is a platform for dialogue with the players in the art world and promotes international exchange. In June 2019, it registered 6,500 visitors at the Basel fair. As the world’s first ever photo art fair, photo basel ventured into the virtual world in addition to the physical fair and launched its first virtual edition in June 2020, which attracted over 20,000 individual visitors to its website.
