Berlin-based artist Marianna Simnett presents her new installation “WINNER” from Friday, 17 May 2024 at Hamburger Bahnhof, which will be shown in the context of the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany. “WINNER” echoes the dramaturgy of the game and dissects its socially constructed power hierarchies, crowd psychology, and constant pressure to perform in three acts. The film restages and radically transforms football’s most impassioned moments: elation and triumph, brutality and ferocity, suffering and defeat.

Marianna Simnett’s (b. 1986 in London, UK; lives and works in Berlin) multidisciplinary artistic approach brings together film, dance, and music. The multi-channel video installation “WINNER” (2024), consisting of video and sculpture, deals with the social impact of the sport. While it matches and simultaneously subverts the architecture and choreography of football, Simnett’s vivid hallucinatory world extends beyond the screen into the exhibition. The film is adapted from the 1954 short story “The Destructors” by Graham Greene and performed by a group of contemporary dancers who role-play as fans, players, and wardens. The characters morph between human and animal form and are occasionally interrupted by vendors offering hotdogs and beer.
Accompanying the exhibition is the sixth edition of the Hamburger Bahnhof catalog series, published by Silvana Editoriale Milano.
The exhibition is curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, Directors of Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, and Charlotte Knaup, curator at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart.
