On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Modern Art Collection presents itself in a new way on 3,600 square metres of exhibition space with around 350 works by more than 150 artists. Under the programmatic exhibition title MIX & MATCH, painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography and video art meet for the first time in thematic spaces that transcend epochs and media. In unconventional juxtapositions, works of art from 120 years open up lively perspectives on central questions of our present.

Since the opening of the Pinakothek der Moderne in 2002, not only the collection holdings have grown and expanded. Against the background of social upheavals and crises, the institution of the museum is frequently rethinking its core tasks and exhibition practices. In the wake of globalisation and networking, there is a desire to revise the Eurocentric and North American canon. The awareness for an art history of rediscoveries and new discoveries is awakened.
The profound social changes during the past twenty years have not only brought a welcome rejuvenation and internationalisation for the Sammlung Moderne Kunst, but also a conscious expansion of the formerly exclusive collection of paintings to include sculpture, installation, photography and time-based media. A milestone for the expansion of the photographic holdings to include the first half of the 20th century was the affiliation of the Ann and Jürgen Wilde Foundation in 2010. The recent cooperation with the Written Art Collection broadens the spectrum of the collection to include cultural regions of the Near and Middle East as well as East Asia.
The new collection tour illuminates content that is of increasing relevance to 21st century society – such as social cohesion, migration movements, new forms of work or environmental issues. But artists also re-examine genres and motifs rich in art historical tradition, such as the nude, the self-portrait or images of nature, as well as aesthetic concepts of the anti-academic or the spiritual.

The tour begins with two works that were created more than eight decades apart: August Macke’s painting “Mädchen unter Bäumen” (1914) and the video work “Kindergarten Antonio Sant’ Elia, 1932” (1998) by David Claerbout. In the progressive juxtaposition of a painting that suggests movement with expressionist colour design with a photograph set in motion, the differences, but also the similarities of the respective artistic concerns and means of expression become perceptible.
As a presentation spanning genres and epochs, MIX & MATCH follows both the interdisciplinary founding idea of the Pinakothek der Moderne and the awareness of diversity and change in our immediate present. Accordingly, MIX & MATCH is not a static presentation. Sensitive works on paper or textile works are exchanged at regular intervals. These rehangings create new dialogues and make it possible to show significantly more exhibits from the rich collection holdings; some of them have never been presented before. A repeat visit is therefore worthwhile.
