Freigänger/Åpen soning | The Knast | 28.06.-30.06.2019

Editors’ Choice

On the last weekend of June, 50 Norwegian and German artists will occupy the former women’s prison The Knast in Berlin-Lichterfelde. The artists who come together for the exhibition Freigänger will enter their prison cells and transform them into artistic spaces with site-specific projects comprising visual art, sculpture, installations, video, sound and performance.

The prison forms the contextual and physical framework for this exhibition, but the invited artists remain free in their artistic reactions. Both the exhibition and the publication reflect different forms of imprisonment and imprisonment, but also the inevitable question: What does it really mean to be free?

The former women’s prison was built in 1906 and was in operation until 2008. In recent years, the facility has served as a prison with an open prison system – a prison for prisoners in custody.

The cells of The Knast prison, which is now a listed building, are spread over three floors and are still in their original state.

The exhibition project Freigänger was initiated by the Norwegian artist Crispin Gurholt and the Norwegian curator Helga-Marie Nordby. It takes place in conjunction with Norway’s appearance this year as Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Freigänger is supported by NORLA and Fritt Ord and includes a publication to be published at the Book Fair. Editors of the publication are Ruby Paloma and Nicolas Siepen.
