A hippopotamus set against a snake, a monkey on felt, natural forms that become Japanese characters, lines, reflections, mirror boxes that symbolize life in mechanical tracks; photographs that open up abysses. The eight exhibiting artists of the Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen 1867 represent a cross-section of the 54 current members of this traditional association, to which Käthe Kollwitz herself once belonged. The association also played an essential role in Käthe Kollwitz’s life and enabled her to receive professional training in his drawing and painting school, founded in 1868.

In the special exhibition “Black + White”, old and young are represented, both female artists from Berlin and those who moved here from Germany and abroad. The Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen 1867 is a motor, network and showcase for women artists. Many well-known women artists of the modern age were closely connected with the professional association as members, pupils, teachers or participants in the association’s exhibitions. “Since the Association of Berlin Women Artists 1867, although one of the oldest cultural institutions in Berlin, does not have a fixed exhibition venue, we are very grateful that we are guests at the Käthe Kollwitz Museum for the second time,” says Ute Gräfin von Hardenberg, 1st chairwoman of the association.

The monochrome working method has a long tradition and found an unprecedented exclusivity in Kollwitz’s work. While Kollwitz mainly used black lines and surfaces on white paper, the contemporary artists fathom the possibilities of dealing with the non-colours black and white and all grey tones in between in various techniques and, as in an orchestral piece, the result is a harmonious and at the same time haunting overall sound. Represented are charcoal drawings, collages, photographs, sculptures, installations and mirror boxes. Dr. Anna Havemann, curator of the exhibition, promises that “the abstinence of color will challenge viewers to reflect on their patterns of perception in our world of a flood of color.

Dr. Josephine Gabler (Director Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum Berlin): “We are very pleased to have the VdBK 1867 again as a guest in the Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum. After the corona eruption it will be the only special exhibition of the museum in 2020. All other external presentations have been cancelled or postponed. However, it is a special concern of the Kollwitz Museum, especially in these difficult times, to offer female artists a public. As a further support, works by members of the VdBK 1867 can be purchased by visitors for the first time during this exhibition in the museum. We sincerely hope that this unique offer will be taken up actively.
