The director and choreographer Arila Siegert, together with the artists’ group Violett, undertakes for the first time the scenic realisation of Wassily Kandinsky’s stage composition Über die Mauer (Over the Wall) from 1913/14. The production was created as part of the academy’s focal point „Arbeit am Gedächtnis – Transforming Archives“ as a co-production of the Akademie der Künste with the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. The performances will take place from 1 to 3 October 2021 at the Academy of Arts (Akademie der Künste) on Pariser Platz.
Over the Wall is Wassily Kandinsky’s playful exploration of his theory of the Gesamtkunstwerk. He had been concerned with it since around 1908 and thought of it as an equal interplay of the various arts without their merging. In Über die Mauer he expanded his considerations to include an important component: the viewer, the listener. In the form of a fictitious dialogue between artist and recipient that goes beyond art, he calls on the latter to listen and look closely; they should be open, empathetic and curious, freeing the “soul” from the walls that surround them.
In her exploration of Kandinsky, Arila Siegert is concerned with opening up an experimental space in which the participants find a common form from freely unfolding sensory perception. After Der gelbe Klang (1993) and Violett (2019), Über die Mauer is Siegert’s third production of one of his stage compositions; both were created at the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau. The artist group Violett (with artists from theatre, music, visual arts and dance) emerged as a free formation from this work.
