Change of artistic direction | KINDL – Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst

Editors’ Choice

Andreas Fiedler will hand over the artistic direction of the KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art in Berlin in spring 2020. At his own request, he has terminated his permanent contract in order to work from Berlin as a freelance curator again in the future and to devote himself to new projects. A finding committee has already begun its work to fill the vacancy.

During his almost eight years as founding director, Andreas Fiedler has built up, developed and consolidated the structural and content-related orientation of the building and anchored the new institution in Berlin’s cultural landscape within a short space of time. The exhibition series conceived by him in the 20-metre-high Kesselhaus with only one artistic work per year gives the KINDL a unique profile. The site-specific interventions in the Kesselhaus by Roman Signer, David Claerbout, Haegue Yang, Thomas Scheibitz, and Bettina Pousttchi, as well as the solo and group exhibitions in the Maschinenhaus curated by Andreas Fiedler, have made the KINDL known far beyond Berlin as a venue for international, contemporary art at the highest level.

“We are infinitely grateful to Andreas Fiedler for sharing our vision of a centre for contemporary art in the former brewery building from the very beginning and for developing it together with us. Only thanks to his precise and high-quality exhibition planning was it possible to turn the KINDL into the distinguished exhibition house it is today in the relatively short time since its complete opening in autumn 2016. We very much regret losing him as artistic director, but fortunately he will remain with the KINDL as artistic advisor”, said the owners of the KINDL, Salome Grisard and Burkhard Varnholt.

“The task of conceiving and building a centre for contemporary art in Berlin as founding director was very appealing to me. After the intensive construction and planning phase, it was also great to realize around 20 exhibitions in these unique rooms. After almost eight years at KINDL, I am now looking forward to moving back to freelance work and new fields of activity. The time seems to me to be ideal for the handover to a new artistic director: The structures in the KINDL are solid and consolidated, the institution is well established in the Berlin cultural landscape and a great team guarantees functioning processes”, comments Andreas Fiedler.

At present, a finding commission is conducting talks on the appointment of a new artistic director for the KINDL. The new name is expected to be announced towards the end of October.
