On the occasion of the exhibition workshop ‘DenkRaum’ of the Research Campus Dahlem (FC Dahlem), the event ‘New Urban Fabric: Architecture in the Changing Times’ on 5 December from 6 to 9 pm will shed light on Berlin’s urban and architectural transformation in the context of ‘time and temporality’. It focuses on transience, constant change and the adaptation of architecture to new cultural and urban needs. FC Dahlem, a new type of research and presentation centre, offers the ideal setting for this.

A central element of the event is Michael Wesely’s photograph ‘Oranienburgerstrasse, Berlin (31.08.2018 – 25.09.2023)’. Wesely is known for his unusual technique of long-term exposure, which he uses to condense periods of several years into a single image. His works illustrate how urban spaces are constantly changing and how the time factor plays a central role in the process of architectural transformation. Wesely’s photographs question the traditional understanding of photography as a snapshot and instead show how visual narratives are created over longer periods of time. His documentation of Berlin’s urban landscape offers a unique insight into the dynamics of urban development and the visible traces of time and transience.
Wesely’s perspective will be complemented by Kirsty Bell, author of the non-fiction book ‘Tides of the City’, who analyses the historical and cultural processes of Berlin’s urban development. The event will be moderated by Sorana Rădulescu, an expert in architecture and urban planning, who will guide the exchange between experts and the audience on the topics of ‘time and change’.
Registration is requested at: New Urban Fabric: Architecture through the ages (smb.museum).
