The Sandau & Leo Gallery in Berlin is closing on 31 December 2024. Gallery owner Doris Leo is ending her work after 34 years and will remain active in the field of art education. From 2025, Jörg Sandau will continue the gallery under the name Galerie Sandau in the existing premises and realise new projects.

Gallery owner Doris Leo was already working as an art historian and in art education during the GDR era. She was particularly committed to painting and graphic art and worked with artists such as Harald Metzkes and Michael Jastram. After reunification, she supported East German artists in order to offer them a platform in the all-German art scene. Her work bridged the different art traditions before and after reunification and thus remains part of Berlin’s recent art history.
In the statement sent out today, Doris Leo and Jörg Sandau personally address the art-interested public:
‘Dear ladies and gentlemen, dear friends of the gallery, we would like to inform you that the Sandau & Leo Gallery will close on 31 December 2024. It was not an easy decision to give up my beloved and enthusiastic work as a gallery owner after 34 years. I can only thank you, the collectors and art lovers, for your continued commitment and curiosity and you, the artists, for the many years of intensive and exciting collaboration and for the trust you have placed in me. My time at the gallery is coming to an end, but my enjoyment of art education remains.’

From 1 January 2025, I will be running Galerie Sandau in the previous premises at Tucholskystraße 38. You will shortly receive an invitation to the first exhibition of the new year and I would like to invite you to art Karlruhe 2025 in February.
