With the opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport “Willy Brandt” (BER) on 31 October 2020, Olaf Nicolai’s installation GADGET will be permanently on display at Terminal 1 from this day on. Nicolai is one of five artistic positions on the subject of “air – land”, which will be presented as art in architecture at BER.
Olaf Nicolai’s work GADGET, made of white glass spheres, is like an oversized string of pearls winding in several turns around the passenger bridge at Terminal 1. The spheres wrap themselves around this bridge like a bracelet. The frequency of the lights visualises and signals the respective and current use of the passenger boarding area: from the unused bridge to active use to take-off or approach. In addition to the lighting rhythm, the luminous intensity of the spheres also changes.
Passengers can perceive the changing light rhythm and light intensity of the installation in the waiting area or during boarding. The lights can also be seen from the air during approach and departure and accompany passengers and crew from the first to the last visual contact.
The information was communicated to DEEDS by Galerie EIGEN + ART Berlin, which represents Olaf Nicolai.
