On Friday, 5 September 2025, the project space SCOTTY opens the exhibition “OSZILLATIONEN – between order and chaos” by Hans-Peter Klie and Andreas Schmid. Through video works, photographs and spatial drawings, the two artists address the principles of order and chaos and illustrate their interplay in artistic form.

In contrast to many Western traditions, where chaos and order are seen as opposites, Far Eastern philosophies tend to dissolve this polarity into a larger whole. While modern chaos theory, from a scientific perspective, defines the boundaries of determinism internally, Far Eastern philosophy offers a holistic framework in which chaos and order can be understood as complementary aspects of reality.
Thus, Far Eastern philosophy provides an alternative to a deterministic worldview that dominated Western science for a long time. It enables an understanding in which the world oscillates between order and chaos, without either principle being regarded as fundamentally superior or desirable.
In their joint conception, Hans-Peter Klie and Andreas Schmid create a composition that employs metaphors both formally and conceptually, demonstrating that the world oscillates between order and chaos.
Hans-Peter Klie’s video and photographic works make the principles of chaotic systems visible and tangible. He captures flow fields in both still images and in motion. These arose after days of heavy rainfall in the mountainous regions of southern Norway, leading to exponential algae growth within a river. The resulting flow structures, situated “between the Milky Way and microscopic cell structures,” serve as metaphors for the passage of time in which they arise and disappear. They form a visual and cognitive bridge between abstract concepts and lived reality.
Andreas Schmid also works with metaphors: his complex spatial structures, often juxtaposing contradictory perspectives and axes, expand spatial perception. Using different methods – drawn, painted, cut, or created with string and light sources – he avoids clear localisation and encourages reflection on complex interrelations by creating new, graspable forms.
Klie and Schmid’s works highlight that the term “chaos” need not only be understood as a state without discernible rules. While in Western contexts chaos is often associated with the absence of structure, their works present the possibility of perceiving it as productive. The absence of immediately apparent rules or patterns is not understood as a deficit but as a potential.
