After almost three years of extensive renovation, the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Cologne will reopen its doors on 11 October 2025 – marking both the 80th anniversary of the artist’s death (1867–1945) and the museum’s 40th anniversary.

The reopening exhibition KOLLWITZ NEU SEHEN presents drawings, prints, and sculptures from its internationally acclaimed collection in a new display. Newly acquired works complement the selection and broaden the view of Kollwitz’s oeuvre.

At the core are themes that occupied Kollwitz throughout her life and remain relevant today: social inequality, political upheaval, gender roles, and the lives of women in difficult times. The exhibition deliberately emphasizes the artist’s female perspective – on motherhood, loss, grief, but also hope and solidarity.
Depictions of housing shortages, poor working conditions, or the consequences of war and violence underscore the continued relevance of her work.

In addition, the museum is introducing new spaces dedicated to art education. Its address also changes: from “Neumarkt Passage” to “Kollwitz Forum” – a clear statement by the Kreissparkasse Köln, the museum’s sponsor, affirming the artist’s lasting significance.
