With Stadtbad RELOADED: BEYOND, the disused Stadtbad Lichtenberg public swimming pool in Berlin will reopen its doors on 11 October 2025 for an exhibition that combines digital art and sound with historical architecture. Following its successful presentation in 2024, the 97-year-old swimming pool will be expanded with new installations this time around.

This year’s exhibition centres on the immersive ceiling projection BEYOND, combined with cinematic sounds. It takes visitors on a visual and emotional journey that artistically explores mental phenomena such as overthinking, overwhelming and ultimately letting go.

In cinematic sequences, abstract structures alternate with first-person perspectives, accompanied by music composed especially for the installation. Beanbags allow visitors to comfortably view the various artistic sequences. The transition from the everyday to the dreamlike and on to a flight through cosmic space makes BEYOND a central innovation of this year’s exhibition.
Works of art can be seen in many areas of the historic swimming pool, incorporating the existing architecture – from the former women’s swimming pool and changing rooms to shower cubicles and stairwells.

Another special feature is the AMBILIGHT installation, which uses 63,000 LEDs to give classic video games such as Tetris and Snake a new look and bathe the former pool area of the Lichtenberg municipal swimming pool in different lighting moods.

Two atmospheres – day and night
As in 2024, BEYOND also thrives on the changing daylight conditions. During the day, the incoming sunlight emphasises the architecture and makes the digital works appear in bright contrast. In the evening, the screens come to the fore, while the ceiling projection creates an almost floating, mystical atmosphere.

Visitors can choose between day tickets and night tickets, depending on the atmosphere they want to experience. If you want to experience both the daytime and night-time atmosphere, we recommend choosing a ticket time slot approximately 1 hour before sunset.

Digital art in historical architecture
The Stadtbad Lichtenberg – also known as Hubertusbad – was opened in 1928 in the expressionist style and has been a listed building since its closure in 1991. Today, it provides the setting for an unusual encounter: in rooms that once accommodated swimmers and sauna guests, digital artworks unfold on more than 150 screens. Moving images, projections and light installations enter into a dialogue with the architecture of the building – from the women’s swimming pool to the changing rooms and stairwells.

With Stadtbad RELOADED: BEYOND, another chapter is added to the history of this listed building. Architecture and digital art intertwine once again – this time on an even larger scale and with an immersive installation that literally draws the eye upwards.

The Stadtbad Lichtenberg
The Stadtbad Lichtenberg, also known as Hubertusbad, opened in 1928. It was built as a multi-section cubic structure in the Expressionist style with what were considered very modern facilities at the time: medical baths, a Russian-Roman section as a sauna area with warm and hot air rooms, massage cabins and a shower room with cold water pools, a large water exchange tank in the basement, which enabled the water in the swimming pools to be cleaned quickly, a free-standing swimming pool for women (20 metres) and one for men (25 metres), bathtub and shower areas, galleries to the swimming halls, a gymnastics hall, areas for physiotherapy treatments, a sun terrace and a lift.

In 1991, the Lichtenberg municipal swimming pool was closed due to structural defects and a lack of funds for its actual function. The building is a listed monument.
