Close Up goes far beyond the classic question-and-answer format. The focus is on an intensive dialogue that sheds light on Roland Emmerich’s artistic career as well as his current perspective on cinema. From his early experimental works to major Hollywood productions and his global impact, a multi-layered portrait emerges of a director who is always a visionary and forward thinker. The conversation provides insights into his values, his motivation and his personal attitude – and shows how much life beyond the film set shapes his work.
Roland Emmerich (1955) is one of the big names in Hollywood cinema, with blockbusters such as Stargate, Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and Godzilla to his name. His graduation film, The Noah’s Ark Principle (1984), set early standards in special effects. Emmerich lives with his husband in Los Angeles.

For over three decades, Gero von Boehm has been a highly regarded interviewer and author of profiles of international personalities from the worlds of film, theatre, music, literature, architecture and fashion.
