On 8 June 2023, the founding meeting of the GCC (Gallery Climate Coalition) Berlin e.V. was celebrated at the Neue Nationalgalerie. The international initiative is dedicated to building knowledge about sustainability in museums and resources for local art institutions. Co-initiator is the artist Haley Mellin, currently Max Beckmann Fellow at the American Academy together with the Neue Nationalgalerie. As part of the founding of the association in Berlin, the website Barder.art was launched, through which Berlin art institutions can coordinate the sharing of resources and materials.

With the founding of the association, GCC (Gallery Climate Coalition) Berlin e. V. is now the first official offshoot of GCC in Germany. GCC is an international association of art organisations with the aim of jointly reducing the environmental impact of the art business. GCC’s main goal is to reduce CO2 emissions in the arts sector by at least 50% by 2023 and to establish zero-waste practices. GCC was founded in London in 2020 and most recently GCC New York was launched in April 2023: www.galleryclimatecoalition.org

Klaus Biesenbach, Director Neue Nationalgalerie: “It is an honour to be able to appropriately honour the founding of GCC Berlin, such an important initiative, at the Neue Nationalgalerie. Above all, I am grateful that our Max Beckmann scholarship holder Haley Mellin is helping to promote such important innovations.”

Women artists already met in Berlin in 2020 as part of the international initiative GCC, most recently in May 2022 at Callie’s Kunstraum. The founding of the Berlin association was preceded in May 2023 by a series of internal workshops on sustainable museum work, hosted by artist and conservationist Haley Mellin at the Neue Nationalgalerie. Participants included Dirk Messner, President of the Federal Environmental Agency, and Berlin artists such as Simon Denny, Olafur Eliasson, Katharina Grosse and Tino Sehgal, as well as museum staff. Mellin is a Max Beckmann Fellow at the American Academy and Neue Nationalgalerie. She initiated the project “Art to Acres” in 2017 and is a member of the Environmental Council of the Moca, Los Angeles, which she founded together with Klaus Biesenbach in 2020.
