This year’s works deal with the relationship between humans and the plant world. This is a link to the current special exhibition “Plant Fever. Botany, Man, Design” at Pillnitz Palace and at the same time establishes a link to the anniversary of the nature romantic Caspar David Friedrich. The works by contemporary artists Benjamin Dittrich, Cornelia Schleime, Manuel Frolik, Oliver Matz, Sebastian Stumpf, Stephan Ruderisch, Taemen Jung, Ulf Puder, Ulrich Gebert and Ulrike Gärtner come from the collection of the Kunstfonds der Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD), all of which have been acquired over the last 30 years through the promotional purchases of the Free State of Saxony. They take a sometimes analytical, sometimes exploratory, sometimes humorous artistic look at the interaction between man and nature. The contemporary works of art in the historical ambience of the former courtly surroundings invite viewers to reflect on the formative relationship of modern man and his interaction with his environment. Today, almost everything that surrounds us is a designed cultural landscape and subject to human use.

“Artists’ Conquest” is an exhibition format with which the SKD and the State Palaces, Castles and Gardens of Saxony (SBG) have been cooperating at Pillnitz Palace and Park for four years now and see the cultural monument as a cross-institutional visitor experience. The format deliberately works with positions of contemporary art that intervene in a dialogical way to readjust the view of the palace and in turn the art itself and involve the public.

It has also been a long time since an artist has moved into Pillnitz Castle as a studio. Frank Lippold (*1970) explores the technique of woodcutting on a large scale and devotes himself to the Elbe island, which is a nature reserve. The artist will give an insight into his working methods on the opening evening. The artist’s studio is made possible in collaboration with the Dresden Center for Science and Art (DZWK). Most recently, the painter, graphic artist and illustrator Ludwig von Hofmann (1861-1945) had his studio in the Wasserpalais, which is also currently the subject of the exhibition “Monumental!” at the Schlossmuseum.
