Cinematic Autumn – Destination: Tashkent – A film and discourse festival in Tashkent and Berlin

Editors’ Choice

The Destination: Tashkent festival celebrates the extraordinary history and cultural influence of the Tashkent Festival for Asian, African and Latin American Cinema, which took place for the first time in Uzbekistan in 1968. The festival will be revived at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) and other venues in Berlin and Tashkent. The film and discourse festival will kick off in Tashkent from 26 to 29 September 2024. The opening will take place on 26 September at 6:30 pm at the Goethe-Institut in Tashkent, including a film talk with the renowned filmmaker Ali Khamraev.

Inspired by the historical film festival, the festival presents a selection of films that were shown in the original programme at the time, together with contemporary works by filmmakers from Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The films will be shown either with live dubbing in English and Uzbek or with subtitles. The programme is organised by Can Sungu, curator for film practices at HKW, and the Goethe-Institut Uzbekistan in cooperation with local initiatives that curate the short film series.

In addition to the film screenings, the festival will focus on discussion panels, community events and workshops. International filmmakers, film critics and academics will discuss the historical significance of the film festival and the perspectives of the younger generation of filmmakers.

From 20 September to 14 October 2024, an exhibition of archive materials and artefacts will also bring the history of the festival to life at the Ilkhom Theatre in Tashkent.

The second part of the festival will revive the spirit of the festival from 27 November to 1 December 2024 in Berlin at the venues Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) and Sinema Transtopia. In addition to historical productions that reflect the diversity of the original programme, Destination: Tashkent will also show current films from Central Asia and the Berlin-based diaspora from three continents.

The discourse programme examines the traces that the Tashkent Festival has left behind in today’s film festivals, film productions and distribution networks.

The festival will be accompanied by a reader with texts and conversations, archive finds and the results of curatorial research on site, which will be presented during the programme in Berlin.

Destination: Tashkent is a festival organised by Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Uzbekistan.
