The VILLA in Fulda is dedicated to the early work of Franz Erhard Walther and presents the formative influences on his work in the years 1957-1960 in the third exhibition, which can be seen from 13 October 2024.

The exhibition BILDBAUSTOFF brings together various aspects that were important to Franz Erhard Walther in the decisive years between 1957 and 1960 and became the building material for the basis of an oeuvre that a few years later was given a definition that is still valid today.
Every work is preceded by a time in which the surrounding influences, the visual and intellectual imprints form the material basis for an artistic cosmos that is still without a name at the beginning.
Exemplary works by Walther are shown alongside documents of the time, whose traces are often only recognisable at a later date and in a different form. Even if these imprints are inextricably linked to the respective place and time, the individuality, without which a definition of the work is not possible, is formed in the specific interests and preferences and the connections between the various images that can only be understood in retrospect.
The exhibition presents, among other things, documentation of documenta 2, which took place in Kassel in 1959; works created in connection with Walther’s travels to Spain, Greece and Turkey; films and experimental films that were shown in Fulda cinemas in the second half of the 1950s; material on the influence of the American presence in Fulda; examples of the literature and philosophy that occupied Walther during these years; a selection of photographs from the Fulda city archive, in which the origins of later manifestations of his work can be recognised.
