To mark the Day of German Unity, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden is opening its doors for a special song recital: the celebrated soprano Camilla Nylund, internationally acclaimed as an interpreter of Wagner and Strauss, is back in Berlin. Accompanied on the piano by Helmut Deutsch, one of the most important song accompanists of our time, she will lead the audience into a multi-faceted world of sound with songs by Strauss, Korngold, Zemlinsky, Berg, Mahler and Järnefelt. Following her performance as Elsa in Lohengrin in spring 2024, this evening promises to be another highlight. From 27 October, Camilla Nylund can be seen again at the Staatsoper in Die Frau ohne Schatten.

Camilla Nylund and Helmut Deutsch frame their programme with songs by the two most successful opera composers of their time: Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Richard Strauss. Like Korngold, Alexander Zemlinsky, Alban Berg and Gustav Mahler also worked in Vienna. Berg’s seven early songs, Mahler’s Rückert songs and Strauss’s famous four songs op. 27 are also closely linked to the biography of the respective composer: Strauss gave the songs to his wife as a wedding present, Alban Berg dedicated the collection of his early songs to his later wife, Gustav Mahler’s Rückert songs were written at the time when he met his later wife, and the songs of the Finnish composer Armas Järnefelt were also often written for one of his two wives.
Two more outstanding singers from the international opera world will be guests this season with solo recitals in the Great Hall of the Unter den Linden theatre: Joyce DiDonato, who made her debut at the Staatsoper last season, returns for a recital on 11 April 2025 as part of Festtage 2025, and Elīna Garanča can be seen on stage at the Staatsoper with a solo programme on 2 June 2025.
