Editors’ Choice

After the great success in recent years, the fifth joint summer festival of the Bröhan Museum with the Rathgen-Forschungslabor (Research Laboratory) and the Museum Berggruen of the National Museums in Berlin will take place on Thursday, 18 July 2019 from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm. Admission is free. In the common ensemble of buildings directly at Charlottenburg Palace, visitors can expect a varied programme of exhibitions and events (see below).

At the Bröhan Museum the exhibition “Reaching Out for the Future. Future fantasies around 1900” is opened. Fascinated by mechanization and inspired by literary visions of the future, cartoonists of the time created imaginative images of the future. Visitors* inside the mobile Future Laboratory can print sustainable jute bags and put their ideas for the future on paper. There will also be guided tours through the special exhibition “Scandal! Myth! Modernity! The Association of XI in Berlin” and the newly designed permanent exhibition “Art Nouveau – Art Deco – Functionalism”.

The programme of the Rathgen Forschungslabor (Rathgen Research Laboratory) ties in with the exhibition of the Bröhan Museum and offers insights into the development of cultural heritage research since the days of Friedrich Rathgen under the title “The Future of the Past – Conservation Science in Transition”. In a joint campaign between the “Cultural Heritage Research Alliance” and the Leibniz Association, visitors* will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in the preventive conservation of cultural assets in an interactive computer game. There will also be guided tours behind the scenes.

On the occasion of the summer festival, the Museum Berggruen offers highlight tours through the current collection presentation as well as through the special presentation “Klee und die Abstraktion”. Paul Klee’s paintings enter into a dialogue here with works otherwise on view at the Neue Nationalgalerie, such as those of his colleagues at the Bauhaus Lyonel Feininger, Georg Muche and Oskar Schlemmer, but also with works by Klee’s contemporaries Hans (Jean) Arp, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Erich Buchholz, Hannah Höch, Piet Mondrian and Kurt Schwitters.
