This VW Research Fellowship aims to support research in the field of archival work in regards to contemporary art, especially here the history of KW. The fellowship is awarded for two years.

Kunst-Werke Berlin e. V. / KW Institute for Contemporary Art devotes itself to central topical questions through the production, presentation and promotion of contemporary art. Since its foundation more than 25 years ago, the institution has established itself as a vibrant venue for progressive artistic practices within Berlin and international art scenes. By means of exhibitions and a range of other events, KW always addresses current trends within the national and international field of contemporary art and cultural discourse and develops these themes in cooperation with artists, institutions and through direct commissioned works.

Aims of the VW Research Fellowship

The fellowship is a KW project and made possible through the generous support of Volkswagen AG and realized under a project contract that covers two years, with the option of a one-year extension. It is a scientific commission focused on the history and influence of KW in the city of Berlin. The project is dedicated to the scientific preparation, structure, and design of KW’s archive. The goal of this research position is to digitize parts of the extensive archive, adapt it for publication and thus make it accessible to society as a whole, including research, and teaching institutes. Furthermore, the research fellow is expected to share and present his/her findings in a series of discussions and public workshops.

The VW Fellow Scholarship Program was launched in 2012 with the aim of enabling young talents to gain practical experience in cultural institutions. The first VW Fellows had received their scholarship at the Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1, New York. Since then, numerous young talents have worked in various departments – from education to exhibition management – at the MoMA, MoMA PS1, the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg and the Schinkel Pavillon.

Grant

Based on a freelance contract, the research fellow shall receive a monthly fee of € 2.500 (gross) over a period of 24 months with the option of a one-year extension. The fee is paid in advance on a quarterly basis.

The research fellow is independent and is not under obligation to reside at KW. The purpose of this approach is to create more flexibility. A work desk will be available at KW. The research fellow will have KW’s infrastructure and network at his/her disposal.

Requirements

The fellowship is aimed at graduates in the specialized fields of art history, archive studies, library science or related faculties. Special criteria include experience in archiving and contemporary art along with an initial outline for realizing the project and publicizing the archive through a series of public events.
