On Thursday, 30 October 2025, SomoS Arts is hosting an evening with Colombian-American writer Carlos Mejía Suárez, who will present Scars of a Natural Bond: a new collection of stories and novellas that interweave personal memories, public violence, literary biography, and supernatural horror in a distinctly tropical-Gothic style. The event will be held in English.

In an intimate setting, Suárez reads from texts that reflect his interest in the connection between literature and other art forms. These encounters have deepened his interest in exploring narrative forms that respond to and resonate with other art forms.
In this reading, Suárez unfolds three narrative sequences that move between Colombian and broader Latin American contexts. They touch on themes such as biography, horror and history, traversing imagined and real geographies – from Bogotá to Berlin and beyond. His prose moves between memory and myth, city and wilderness, the personal and the surreal.
The evening will conclude with a discussion moderated by Dr Angela Flury, German writer, translator and professor emeritus of comparative literature at DePauw University (USA), in which she and Mejia will reflect on the experiences, influences and imagery that shape his writing.

Born in Barrancabermeja, Colombia, and based in the United States since 2005, Mejía explores the human experience at the intersection of memory, history and nature. His texts weave together supernatural, ecological, and urban narratives that challenge traditional notions of identity, personhood, and agency. As a resident artist at SomoS Arts in autumn 2025, he is working on literary biographies of Latin American and German authors and developing imaginative settings inspired by Berlin, Colombia, and the United States.
