Starting July 2, 2026, [ materialistin ] presents sculptures and site-specific installations at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart that engage with social and cultural-political issues. The group exhibition by eight Leipzig-based sculptors—Laura Eckert, Enne Haehnle, Elisabeth Howey, Lucy König, Agnes Lammert, Wibke Rahn, Theresa Rothe, and Sophie Uchman—highlights new forms of collective practice and solidarity. It sends a signal that, in this anniversary year, extends far beyond Hamburger Bahnhof.

[ materialistin ] is a group of artists from Leipzig whose work focuses on the expanded field of sculpture. The artists work with steel, stone, plaster, and concrete, plant fibers and renewable raw materials, as well as wax and clay. They produce sculptural objects and site-specific installations. The group positions itself in relation to feminist as well as social and cultural-political issues: it operates in a spirit of solidarity and is organized non-hierarchically. In response to the physical, economic, and logistical challenges of sculpture, the members share knowledge, tools, contacts, and networks. Their intergenerational structure is a distinctive feature within the art world.
The exhibition is part of the “30 Years of Hamburger Bahnhof” anniversary program. In 2026, Hamburger Bahnhof celebrates its 30th anniversary with a program that spans from the site’s history into the future: eight special exhibitions, a new presentation of the collection, as well as performances and concerts extend the museum into the urban space. The highlight will be the anniversary weekend from November 13–15, featuring an international conference on the future of contemporary collection-based museums, during which the museum will remain open continuously for 30 hours.
A volume in the Hamburger Bahnhof catalog series, published by Silvana Editoriale Milano, will accompany the exhibition.
The exhibition is curated by Sam Bardaouil, Director of Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart.
The exhibition is supported by the Hamburger Bahnhof International Companions e.V.
