During the summer holidays of 2018, the National Museums in Berlin will offer families, children and young people a varied program consisting of  workshops as well as exhibition talks.

This year, on the occasion of the large summer camp on Museum Island Berlin, it’s time to say “Together with artists, children and young people explore the museums together with artists and turn the Kolonnadenhof into an open-air studio. What is discovered in the museums is also visible outside – in an open-air exhibition, one’s own paintings, plaster casts, photographs and furniture are presented.

Contemporary art is the focus of the holiday offers in the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum for Contemporary Art – Berlin, in which the exhibition “Hello World. Revision of a collection”. At the Kunstgewerbemuseum the exhibition “Food Revolution. Designing for the Society of Tomorrow “an edible garden will emerge. And the exhibition “100 Percent Wool” offers exciting topics for a holiday week in the Museum of European Cultures in Berlin-Dahlem.

Admission to the National Museums in Berlin is free for children and adolescents up to the age of 18.

Sommercamp Museumsinsel – Rauf auf die Insel!
First holiday week: Tue – Thu / 10 am – 1 pm / 10 – 12.7.2018 (three days)
Fourth holiday week: Tue – Thu / 10 am – 1 pm / 31.7. – 2.8.2018 (three-day).
In the first and fourth week of the holidays, a summer camp for children and young people will take place on the Museum Island Berlin. Four workshops will focus not only on the exhibitions, but also on the outdoor space and the architecture. The colonnade courtyard will become an action area: under the guidance of artists, photography, painting, drawing and sculpting will take place here. The results of all the workshops will be brought together in a final presentation in the Kolonnadenhof, to which parents, siblings and friends are also invited. The meeting point for all workshops is the ticket office of the Neues Museum.

Reine Ansichtssache! – Malerei
on the special exhibition „Wanderlust. Von Caspar David Friedrich bis Auguste Renoir“ in the Old National Gallery.
For children from 6 to 12 years with and without disabilities.

Artists often found motifs for their paintings while hiking in nature. In the exhibition “Wanderlust” you will encounter numerous examples, such as Caspar David Friedrich’s famous painting „Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer“. Equipped with a motif finder and sketchpad, you set out to find your own motifs. Based on your sketches, you will paint views of the Museum Island on canvas in the open-air studio. You will send the most beautiful sketches as postcards.

Illusion oder Wirklichkeit? – Fotomontage
For children from 6 to 12 years
You and Nefertiti are sunbathing on the lawn in front of the New Museum, the statue of Heracles in the Old Museum is wearing your favourite outfit. What is impossible in reality, you can make come true with a photomontage. With your camera, you go in search of your motifs. With the help of a photographer, you will learn different techniques of photomontage and image retouching. In your pictures you will combine past and present, interior and exterior spaces.

For children from 6 to 12 years
Original or cast? You’ll find both in the collections of the Museum Island. What is the difference? Why were plaster casts of famous sculptures already made in antiquity? With the help of an artist, you will learn the technique of plaster casting and duplicate a sculpture. Finally, you place your copy outside the museum in a new context. Which staging do you choose?

Zusammen gebaut – Möbel für den Kolonnadenhof
For young people aged 13 and over
The architecture of the Museum Island is based on the buildings of antiquity. Stone walls, porticoes, high staircases – the monumental architecture can be quite intimidating. How would you design the Museum Island to make it more inviting? Equipped with a floor plan, you explore the architecture of Museum Island and document your observations. Under the guidance of a street artist, you will design furniture and objects that are welcoming and encourage people to stay.

The summer camp is part of the educational project “Connections” of the Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin. “Connections” is supported by the Kuratorium Preußischer Kulturbesitz.

For children from 6 to 9 years
Red, yellow, blue – is that all? You’ll find an infinite number of colours in the painting gallery. What are flea colours? How do you mix pastel shades? What are colours made of? In search of your favourite colours, you explore the museum and create a colour fan. You learn to make these colours from pigments, glue, oil and other ingredients and paint colourful pictures with them.

Tue – Thu / 10 am – 1 pm / 17 – 19.7.2018 (three days).
For children from 6 to 12 years
Many languages are spoken in the world. How can people communicate through body language? Together with others, you can find out who knows which languages and (dance) movements. In the museum you will get inspiration for movement forms from all over the world. Supported by a dancer, you will develop a performance with others that will be performed on the last day of the workshop.

Ausgelöst: Vom Selfie zum Selbstporträt

For young people aged 13 and over
What is the difference between a selfie and a photographic self-portrait? Inspired by portraits of famous artists, you will make your way from snapshots to staged self-portraits. In which setting do you want to portray yourself? What pose do you take? How do you look at the camera? What lighting do you choose? A photographer provides practical tips and advises you on how to use the camera.

Wed – Fri / 10 am – 1 pm / 18 – 20.7.2018 (three days)
For children from 9 to 12 years
What does your room look like? Are the walls wallpapered, painted or plastered? Do you feel like trying something new? Inspired by wall designs in the Museum of Islamic Art, you develop ideas for your home. Collect your designs on a long sheet of paper. You will have stencils, pattern rolls, paints, brushes and stamps at your disposal.

In the Bode Museum you will discover new neighbourhoods: a power figure from the Congo meets a protective mantle Madonna from Germany. What connects these objects that seem so different at first glance? Are there objects in your everyday life with which you associate strength and protection? What “companions” could you use for classwork, in the dark and for the 1000-metre run? You put your ideas into picture stories and build your own power figure.

on the special exhibition „Food Revolution 5.0. Gestaltung für die Gesellschaft von morgen“

For children from 6 to 12 years
How will we feed ourselves in the future? Artists and designers have found answers to this question, which they present in the exhibition. Thus, a meadow orchard and an edible garden will be created in front of the Museum of Decorative Arts. You are working on the idea of urban gardening. How can fruit and vegetables be planted in the city and in your own home?  You build beds from recyclable materials and plant herbs, fruit and vegetables.

For young people aged 13 and over
How do you observe the world through a camera? What position do you take? Do you film from above or below, close up or far away? You will get to know cinematic works of art from different countries in the exhibition. You develop a film idea and realise it alone or in a team with others. A short film is created.

Wolle: Herkunft, Handwerk, Gebrauch
on the special exhibition „100 Prozent Wolle“

For children from 9 to 12 years
For four days, everything revolves around the theme of wool: you learn about the origin, processing and use of wool. In five open workshops you can experiment with wool and other materials. Would you like to learn how to knit or crochet, create with paper or wood, or take photographs and make films? It’s up to you when you visit which workshop. In cooperation with Jugend im Museum e.V.

Tragödien und Komödien im Götterhimmel

For children from 9 to 12 years
Raise the curtain on Zeus, Dionysus, Hades, Athena, Aphrodite and Co. You tell the myths of the Greek world of gods in your self-made peepshow stage. This is equipped with magnificent scenery and many actors. Unexpected twists and new interpretations of the historical stories are expressly encouraged!

Die Zufallswerkstatt mit Überraschungseffekt

For children from 6 to 12 years.
You can produce coincidences and incorporate them artistically without any plan at all. Whether rubbed, blotted or slapped on, we examine the Surrealists’ chance techniques. What other ways can you think of to incorporate chance into pictures? In the holiday workshop, we will stage chance and let it surprise us!

In ancient times there was a goddess of hunting and a god of healing. Which superpower would you like to have? What would you do with these powers? Make up a story in which you play the main role and be inspired by the sculptures in the Collection of Classical Antiquities. In this workshop you will record your own story in a film clip.

Ein Bild, eine Geschichte, ein Comic

A painting shows a snapshot, an excerpt from a story. What could have happened before? What could have happened afterwards? You let your imagination run wild and develop a story. You draw characters and a storyboard. Little by little you create a comic, which you illustrate in colour, reproduce and bind. Your comic books are published in small editions and can be exchanged with others.

In ancient times there was no television, no games console and no internet. How did children spend their day? What games did they play? Did they go to school? You will learn about the life of children in antiquity, try out ancient games and design your own games.

Discover spooky creatures in the Pergamon Museum: Eagles with two heads or dragons with ripped open mouths. What meanings and stories do they conceal? What powers are attributed to them? You design a creature that you would like to be. What abilities would it have? You create your fantasy creature as a collage on paper.

In the exhibition, you will encounter works of art from different parts of the world. You will document your personal tour of the exhibition in the form of a collage.

Will we feed on insects in the future? Will lettuce grow in the kitchen cupboard? How can our society meet the needs of humans, animals and the environment? Ideas and concepts of international designers are presented in the exhibition. What is your idea of future nutrition? What revolution are you striving for? Together with others, you record your ideas as a sketch or collage.

The topics change weekly and can be found on the homepage.
