On May 30, 2025, the popular film series “AugenBlicke im Schloss” kicks off. The first film, THE SHADOW OF CARAVAGGIO, pays homage to the greatest Renaissance painter of chiaroscuro (the contrast of light and dark).
As a symbol of resistance against the powerful, Caravaggio used the poorest of the poor as models – prostitutes and criminals, as well as day laborers and thieves. His bold compositions in both perspective and color shocked viewers of the time while delighting them with something never before seen.
The large-format, highly dramatic panel paintings of the Italian artist were created amid constant attacks and defamation by the clergy and the Roman nomenklatura. Even during Caravaggio’s lifetime, there was a (Vatican) secret police operating in Rome.
