The exhibition for the competition “100 Best Posters Germany Austria Switzerland” annually showcases the latest in graphic design. The focus is on cultural posters. The winning posters of 2024 will be on display at the Kulturforum for three weeks starting June 13, before they go on an international tour. Admission is free.
2024 presents itself as a strongly artistically oriented year in graphic design, with much courage towards graphic minimalism, surreal elements, and visual codes. The “100 Best Posters” surprise with visual effects: An opera kiss is cast in concrete using AI, an electronic festival is depicted in colorful modeling clay, a broccoli tree advertises open-air concerts. However, typography has the largest role: it has become a design element with immense expressive power and diversity.

Jury Selection
The 100 exhibited posters and series of this year’s competition were selected from 2,509 posters submitted by 711 entrants. The five-member international jury of the competition “100 Best Posters,” existing in this form since 2001, changes every year. This time, it consisted of Adeline Mollard (Zurich), Anouk Rehorek (Studio Anouk Rehorek, Vienna), Hans Günter Schmitz (schmitz Visuelle Kommunikation, Wuppertal), Stephanie Specht (Specht Studio, Antwerp), and Jonas Wandeler (Atlas Studio, Zurich).
World of Letters
Typography in the “100 Best Posters 24” is much more than just conveying information – it serves an entire cosmos of visual communication. Letters shout loudly or simulate sounds, tell stories or convey feelings, trace dynamic movements in delicate sequences or form outlines. Hand-drawn unique lettering enters into dialogue with an impressive range of fonts, typography reflecting the individual character of specific events.

Photo Stories, Artistic Techniques, Recycling
Artistic elements also appear in the media and techniques of graphic design. Photographs are paired or arranged in sequences to create film-like narratives. One poster is based on cyanotype, another evokes embossing on fragile white ceramics. A key topic is sustainable design, e.g., through using old posters as printing material or modules in A4 format for self-printing. A poster campaign against death by cold is printed on ISO emergency blankets that can be taken and used.
Club Connection
Electronic music appears more prominently in the “100 Best Posters 24” than in previous years: Club nights, electronic festivals, and event series are advertised. The diversity and networking of the scene is reflected in the graphic design, from retro collages to expressive computer drawings.
The exhibition at Kulturforum is organized by the Graphic Design Collection of the Kunstbibliothek – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. After Berlin, the 100 Best Posters 24 will tour Germany, Austria, Switzerland as well as Korea and Romania starting in July 2025.
