Every two years, Kulturprojekte Berlin presents the “European Month of Photography”, or EMOP for short, one of the largest photography festivals in Germany. Most recently, in autumn 2020, more than 100 exhibitions with over 500 artists were part of the month-long programme selected by a jury of experts.

For the upcoming anniversary of EMOP BERLIN – 10 editions in 20 years – Kulturprojekte Berlin, together with the key players, has set a new timeframe. The new date for the 10th EMOP BERLIN is 2 to 31 March 2023, bringing it closer to the event periods of the European network in Paris, Lisbon and Vienna, among others, most of which take place in spring. Previously, the EMOP in Berlin took place from 1 to 31 October.
Maren Lübbke-Tidow will be the curatorial director of the festival. She works in Berlin as a critic, author, curator and teacher, was editor-in-chief of the magazine Camera Austria International (Graz) and is co-initiator of the interview project Lighting the Archive. She is responsible for the further profiling of the festival as well as for sharpening the content of programme items, including the Opening Days and an anniversary exhibition.
Moritz van Dülmen (Managing Director of Kulturprojekte Berlin): “With the 10th European Month of Photography in Berlin we will have a big anniversary next spring. With more than 100 exhibitions and over 500 photographers, we will celebrate all genres of photographic art, the photo city of Berlin and Germany’s largest photo festival with our European partners!”
EMOP BERLIN is a member of the European Month of Photography (EMOP), a European joint project that currently also includes the photo festivals in Lisbon, Luxembourg, Paris and Vienna. The idea of setting up a European network of photo festivals was born in 2003 on the initiative of Berlin’s partner city Paris. The aim of the joint project is to promote cooperation on a European level, to strengthen the international photo scene, to intensify the exchange of information and experience and to support young artists. Next spring, the festivals will start in Vienna, Paris and Luxembourg.
EMOP Berlin is a project of Kulturprojekte Berlin in cooperation with photo institutions in Berlin and Potsdam. It is made possible by funding from the Senate Department for Culture and Europe and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
