The 36th edition of the transmediale festival will take place from 1 to 5 February 2023 at the Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg and other venues in Berlin. Under this year’s title “a model, a map, a fiction”, the five-day festival explores scaling technologies and how they reconfigure our relationships, emotions and the political. The opening evening of transmediale presents artistic interventions, performance and music. This will be followed by four days of discourse programme with discussions, workshops and film screenings. The transmediale is pleased to announce a very strong advance demand for festival tickets and is already sold out. However, the entire conference programme will be livestreamed on the transmediale website (link below) for those who cannot attend directly.

From the spatial to the temporal, from the intimate to the geopolitical, scaling and standardised systems of measurement and their many technological manifestations influence and shape our perception of the world. Automated and digitally generated images in particular bring to light a politics of scaling that clearly favours certain modes of representation while avoiding others, thus manipulating information and their respective hierarchies. A hologram of the young Queen, sent through the streets of London as a digital substitute to mark the anniversary of her accession to the throne in 2022, can remind a nation in decline of times gone by and make it cheer. Smartphones can regulate transactions of global proportions and a term can generate millions of images with the help of artificial intelligence.
a model, a map, a fiction deals with the political and strategic dimensions of scaling technologies as well as their dissemination and instrumentalisation. The extent to which this instrumentalisation and the power of surveying systems can be unlearned is the focus of transmediale 2023. The festival begins with an opening evening with performances, music and talks, followed by four days of discourse programmes, artistic interventions and workshops. The exhibition by Alan Butler and Simone C Niquille opens simultaneously with the festival on 1 February at the Akademie der Künste and runs until 26 February. The city-wide exhibition Out of Scale will run concurrently over the course of a month.
