The Berliner Ensemble will present the world premiere of the play Spielerfrauen on 9 May 2024. Lena Brasch is an author and director. Following the popular success of “It’s Britney, Bitch!”, she is now working on another evening with actress Sina Martens at the Berliner Ensemble.

It is not only the public assault by the now former football president Luis Rubiales on the Spanish national player Jennifer Hermoso that illustrates the persistence of patriarchal power structures in professional football. Players’ wives can be players’ wives – and at the same time women who are “players”. Women who are involved with players, often bound by lifelong obligations of secrecy, rarely raise their voices. Although they are also in the spotlight, they often remain invisible – after all, equality is not part of the golden cage. Violence against players’ wives, such as in the case of Jérôme Boateng and Kasia Lenhardt, often only comes to light when it is too late. What’s more, the publication provokes a momentum of its own that can jeopardise private lives.
