After her furious opening of Tanztage Berlin 2023 with Bang Bang Bodies, a movement study on headbanging, choreographer Xenia Koghilaki’s new work KOPANIMA is now coming to the Sophiensæle stage. The performance deals with the dance style of moshing, which has its origins in the hardcore punk scene: Here, bodies push against and bang into each other – and at the same time create a great sense of community.

KOPANIMA is a performative, sweat-inducing ritual that captures the movements and gestures from the mosh pit and transforms them into a stage echo. The flowing movements of the performers raise questions about physicality, recovery, vulnerability and resistance – and at the same time reveal gestures of trust and solidarity.
Moshing is a hardcore dance style in which bodies push and bang against each other. In her new group work, Xenia Koghilaki focuses on the forces, dynamics and energies between collectively moving bodies. KOPANIMA is a performative, sweat-inducing ritual that captures the movements and gestures from the mosh pit and transforms them into a stage echo. The flowing movements of the performers raise questions about physicality, recovery, vulnerability and resistance – and at the same time reveal gestures of trust and solidarity. The concert crowd becomes a place of collective struggle and a ritualised form of social cooperation. The audience is immersed in an ambivalent feeling of togetherness and sensory stimulation.
KOPANIMA is the third part of an ongoing performance series following Bang Bang Bodies, which premiered as part of Tanztage Berlin 2023, and Slamming (produced by Onassis Stegi), in which Xenia Koghilaki explores the relationship between the subcultural practices of moshing and those of collective discharge in the masses through dance and choreography.
