Election of the new leadership of der Akademie der Künste in Berlin | 24.05.+25.05.2024

The 62nd general meeting of the Academy of Arts will take place in Berlin on May 24th and 25th, 2024. The conference is not public and ends with the election of the academy’s new leadership. After nine years, the filmmaker Jeanine Meerapfel and the writer Kathrin Röggla are leaving as president and vice president. According to the academy’s statutes, there is no provision for a fourth term of office.

The new President and Vice President are elected from the membership in a secret ballot and for a term of three years. In theory, any of the current 407 members can run. On Monday, May 27, 2024, the new incumbents will introduce themselves in a press conference in the Academy building on Pariser Platz, starting at 11 am.

At the general meeting, the directors of the six art sections will also be elected, also for the next three years, the director and the deputy director. Together with the Presidium, they form the Senate of the Academy of Arts, the institution’s governing and decision-making body. All positions are honorary positions. Another program item in addition to the elections to the Academy’s offices is the admission of new members.

On the occasion of the general meeting, the KULA Compagnie’s Underground Birds theater guest performance with artists from the Simorgh Theater from Herat, Afghanistan will take place on Saturday, May 25th at 7:30 p.m. The performance on Hanseatenweg is part of the current UTOPIA event and exhibition program. Keep on Moving, which deals with the nature of political, social and artistic utopias.
