“Expect nothing, appreciate everything” – with this call for appreciation, the Viennese studio Es is advertising this year’s competition. In animated typography, the black and white campaign lists “100 good reasons”, and not just for good design. The hundred winning motifs themselves are the best reason to take a look at the current exhibition. “Each poster has its own sound, and like a musical ensemble, they play together in the end to form a powerful whole,” says jury chairman Toan Vu-Huu.

Participation and jury
The “100 Best Posters Germany Austria Switzerland” competition, which has been running since 2000, is judged by an annually changing jury. This year, a total of 2,333 posters were submitted by 667 applicants. In a two-stage selection process, the international jury honoured 45 posters from Germany, 51 from Switzerland and 4 from Austria. The jurors were Sandra Doeller (D-Frankfurt am Main), Isabelle Mauchle (CH-Lucerne), Flávia Nalon (BRA-Sao Paulo/DHamburg), Tobias Schererbauer (A-Vienna) and Toan Vu-Huu (F-Paris).

Drawing with letters
In this year’s selection, letters and images come very close together. In many motifs, type moves in creative forms outside the grid, is allowed to meander and push forward, fall and jump, grow and shrink. In this diversity of expression, typographic elements such as character lines are used – the poster becomes a drawing in DIN format.

Colour power and photo-graphics
This year’s winning motifs also impress with their strong use of colour. Powerful statements are created even with just one or two printing colours. Photography also makes a convincing appearance, but in close dialogue with graphics. Photos are mirrored, inverted, coloured or graphically processed in other ways – a broad spectrum of creative enrichment of photography and graphic design.
