“Resurrect In Peace (R.I.P.)” is a funeral for a bird. The passenger pigeon was wiped out more than a hundred years ago, now it is being bid farewell. In the midst of the first species extinction caused by humans, “R.I.P.” honours the finite nature of all existence and questions the political potential of a possible revival.
The performance is inspired by the work of scientists who are currently trying to bring the passenger pigeon back to life in the laboratory. At HAU2, three performers use motion capture – a process in which physical movement data is converted into digital data – to become the masters of ceremony in a farewell ritual. Their bodies combine the physical and the virtual, the absent and the present. “R.I.P.” is a ceremonial admission of guilt, a speculative immersion, a lament in computer graphics.
