Established in 2009, the foundation is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary this year. The exhibition The End Justifies the Means is intended to pay tribute to this. Curated by Berlin exhibition organizer Hans-Jürgen Hafner, the show is about the foundation itself, which its initiator Jochen Kienzle sees as a medium in line with the foundation’s purpose: to actively participate in the production, presentation and communication of art based on the works in the Kienzle Collection.
For the Kienzle Art Foundation, this means continuing what Jochen Kienzle always had in mind as a collector and from 1997 to 2010 as the operator of the Kienzle & Gmeiner Gallery: to enter into a lasting and sustainable relationship with the art of the time and to deal with it actively. If you are not an artist, curator or art critic yourself, you need an appropriately stubborn register. The Kienzle Art Foundation is a medium that goes beyond the purpose of the foundation: it articulates the founder’s desire to ensure a specific approach to art. This abstractly includes its production and circulation, the work on its value as well as its meaning, and consequently enters the field of tension between artistic, curatorial and art-historical-critical practice.
THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS. Der Wunsch, die Abstraktion, die Stiftung is a thematic group exhibition that subjects selected works from the Jochen Kienzle Collection to a re-reading, focusing in particular on the aspect of mediality and reflexivity: which visual-artistic, media-critical, discourse- and context-analytical tools artists have resorted to and how they have used them in the sense of their own historically situated artistic project. Against the horizon of an art stubbornly focused on the present, topicality and materiality, the exhibition also emphasizes the aspect of historical-genealogical development, which is deposited in the formation of collections and institutions – not as a natural “course of things”, but as something that can be shaped, changed and altered with the Kienzle Art Foundation as a point of reference and comparison. Once conceived as a tableau and display at the same time for the opening exhibition of the Kienzle Art Foundation Loose Joints, the Berlin artist Elmar Zimmermann will re-perform his installation “A Wall” in relation to the current exhibition theme.
At the same time, the Kienzle Art Foundation presents itself in a new graphic design. The website was developed in collaboration with cmk Büro für Gestaltung.
