Santiago Sierra has been photographing teeth since 2008: Teeth of Sinti and Roma in Naples, of migrants in Tijuana, of refugees from the Middle East and many more. These works are emblematic of Sierra’s oeuvre, which often deals with the “re-humanization” of groups of people who have been dehumanized by the economy, migration and prejudice. The act of “showing teeth” touches on our most primitive behaviors. It represents a visceral act of threat and defense, as the universally understood idiom makes clear. The Zeitgeist – the title Sierra gave to his project for the n.b.k. façade – reflects a moment of fear and threat, of attack and defense, of showing strength and hiding fragility. The zeitgeist laments the return to a primitive, pre-linguistic position that encompasses the social behavior of individuals, groups and state actors alike.
