In autumn 2025, the Fondation Beyeler will present Switzerland’s first major retrospective devoted to the celebrated Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (*1929, Matsumoto). Developed in close collaboration with the artist and her studio, the exhibition offers a comprehensive insight into more than seven decades of Kusama’s creative practice. On view will be both her most iconic works and early pieces never before shown in Europe, alongside new productions and one of her mesmerizing Infinity Mirror Rooms.

A pioneer and one of contemporary art’s true icons, Kusama has achieved cult status through her exploration of repetition, pattern, and structure – most famously through her distinctive polka dots and mirrored environments that immerse viewers in seemingly boundless spaces. The exhibition underscores the remarkable diversity of media that Kusama has engaged with throughout her career, spanning painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, collage, happenings, live performance, fashion, and literature.

The exhibition “Yayoi Kusama” is organized by the Fondation Beyeler in collaboration with the Museum Ludwig in Cologne (14 March – 2 August 2026) and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (11 September 2026 – 17 January 2027).
