On April 26, 1986, at 1:23 a.m. local time, the worst accident in the history of civilian nuclear power occurred in Reactor Unit 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Just under 10 years later, in 1995, the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden commissioned photographer Volker Kreidler to document the consequences of the disaster for people, places, and nature. This commission evolved from a nature study in 2015 and renewed trips to Kyiv last year into a highly topical testimony to the current political situation in Ukraine. At the heart of the 2025 works is the resilience of the people in Kyiv and the exclusion zone, also in the context of conditions during the Russian war of aggression. “The project comes full circle,” says the photographer. “We are returning to the people to whom we gave a voice back in 1995. Today we are documenting a society caught between destruction and an unwavering determination to embrace a European future.” With this project, Volker Kreidler presents an extraordinary photographic documentation that traces Ukraine’s transformation from the post-Soviet spirit of optimism to the current war of defense against Russia.
