With “A musée vous, A musée moi”, the Centre Pompidou plays on the phonetic similarity to “Amusez-vous” – “Have fun.” In the new web series “Sylvia von Harden steps out of the frame!”, the iconic figure from Otto Dix’s famous portrait literally steps out of the picture. She emerges – out of the frame, out of time – and confronts the present with a gaze that is both sharp and idiosyncratic. In short, pointed episodes, masterpieces come alive, their stories become accessible, and surprisingly relevant today. Since April 5, 2026, this playful dialogue between art history and the present unfolds on YouTube and social media.

The web series “A musée vous, A musée moi” invites viewers to dive into famous paintings by bringing their figures back to life. In a short format of about two minutes, it allows audiences to get to know a work of art and its artist better, while at the same time demystifying the experience of viewing a painting.

For this new season, the iconic Sylvia von Harden comes to life in a carefully reconstructed setting and with a humorous tone. With five episodes released every two weeks on social media, this web series explores the complex relationship between Sylvia von Harden and Otto Dix, marked by mutual admiration but also ambivalence, as well as the circumstances surrounding the creation of this painting and the artistic movement in which it belongs. Otto Dix appears as a clear-sighted and bold painter with a sharp view of society. He paints not to please, but to bear witness. Opposite him stands Sylvia von Harden as a courageous and provocative woman, sometimes prone to exaggeration, but always endowed with biting humor. The web series also addresses contemporary issues: throughout the episodes, Sylvia questions gender-based wage inequalities and reflects on her relationship with her own body and her public image.

Already in the first episode, Sylvia recounts her chaotic day in a staccato rhythm: article rejected, sexist remarks, the sound of boots on the street. At the café, a stranger approaches her, wanting to paint her, convinced that she is the embodiment of a new generation of women.

This episode takes viewers into the artistic spirit of 1920s Berlin. In 1926, Otto Dix approaches Sylvia at the Romanisches Café, a major meeting place of Berlin’s literary and artistic scene in Charlottenburg. Fascinated by her unconventional appearance, the German painter, a leading figure of the New Objectivity, insists on portraying her. This journalist and poet fully embodies the “New Woman,” an emancipated woman with short hair.

This encounter is the origin of an iconic painting in the history of modern art, which today is considered one of the masterpieces of the Centre Pompidou’s collection, and whose story unfolds over the course of the episodes.
