Reinbeckhallen – Sammlung für Gegenwartskunst | Album talks: Show us your pictures!

Editors’ Choice

In the framework of the project Biografie und Geschichte. Private Fotografie in Ostdeutschland 1980–2000 the first album talks will take place on 13 June 2020 in the exhibition hall (Lounge) of the Reinbeckhallen. The Reinbeckhallen Collection of Contemporary Art Foundation, together with its project partner the German Historical Museum, is calling for the presentation of private photographs taken in eastern Germany between 1980 and 2000.

“You lived in East Germany between 1980-2000 and have photographed or own photographs from that time? Whether honeymoon, the first day at school, the party in the garden, the visit from the West or the one from the East: we would be pleased if you would bring your photo albums or photo boxes and tell us your experiences and stories. Make an individual appointment by calling 0151 10409096 or write us an E-Mail. No picture is uninteresting or unimportant to us, and a shoebox full of unordered shots can be just as interesting as three framed wedding pictures or half a shelf space with albums.

Note on the current Covid-19 situation: All album calls require individual registration. These are explicitly non-public meetings, which take place individually, one after the other and without contact with other album owners.”

The conversations are recorded and take place in large and small towns throughout eastern Germany.

Selected albums and recordings of the conversations are then added to the collection of the German Historical Museum. In this way, the DHM is expanding its photographic collection, which until now only contains a few private photographs from East German contexts. On the basis of the private photographs and comments, the biographical and family breaks and continuities in East Germany before and after the “Wende” are to be shown. The collected sources will be scientifically evaluated and will remain available for further research and exhibitions after the end of the project.

The project Biography and History. Private Photography in East Germany 1980-2000, initiated by the photo historian and curator Dr. Friedrich Tietjen and the cultural historian and curator Sophie Schulz, is supported by the Stiftung Reinbeckhallen Collection for Contemporary Art and is funded by the Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur. The German Historical Museum is a project partner.
