The exhibition “Anatomie von Licht und Wasser” (> Anatomy of Light and Water) by the artist Emil Nolde, which has been realised in close cooperation with the Nolde Foundation Seebüll, includes 18 watercolours by the artist, exclusively seascapes, which were painted between 1920 and 1946 in Seebüll near the German-Danish border. They will be on display at the Bastian Gallery from 3 September 2022.

The sea, which Nolde seeks in his watercolours and paints without the presence of man, is linked by the artist to the depth of philosophical questions whose mirror is the sea, part of a cultural history in which the sea has been celebrated throughout the ages in epics and also verse.
In contemplating the sea, Nolde projects an endless dialogue of mysteries, indeed he follows and entrusts himself to the magism of the sea.
In watercolours and ink on Japanese paper, the sea emerges as a symbol of elementary phenomena of nature. Nolde invents the space of the sea and the light in powerful symbioses of complementary phenomena of breathlessness and melancholy out of expressive colour.
