The Lebanese-Dutch artist is one of the most influential voices of her generation. In recent years, her work has received numerous international awards and exhibitions, including the ABN Amro Art Award, a nomination for Artes Mundi 10 (2023) and the Lebanese pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2024). “A land as big as her skin” combines monumental installations from the Biennale with new works created especially for the exhibition.

Al Solh’s work defies simple categorisation. She combines personal experiences with collective memories and political realities, mixing everyday observations with Mediterranean myths. This is also the case in her depiction of the Phoenician queen Elissa, better known by her Roman name Dido. In her artistic practice, she playfully transcends genre boundaries and combines painting, sculpture, video, performance and textile works. Her style remains unmistakable: colourful, multi-layered, full of humour and formal sophistication – with a rhythm reminiscent of music.

About Mounira Al Solh
Having grown up in Lebanon, a country characterised by civil war, Al Solh’s works reflect the experience of war, displacement and resistance. Her works tell of resilience, longing, identity and justice – themes that are fuelled by gender, origin and social affiliation.

After studying painting at the University of Beirut, she continued her training at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Today, the artist lives and works between Lebanon and the Netherlands – a cultural and emotional bridge that also runs through her work.
