The group exhibition “Big City Baby” at ZAK – Zentrum für Aktuelle Kunst provides insights into both the status quo and the diversity of contemporary young painting and graphic art. Between humour and seriousness, crisis and happiness, the young artists of weißensee kunsthochschule berlin deal with the different facets of the urban: youthfulness in the city; the metropolitan area as overload and retreat; the city as home to the (self-chosen) family; exploration of urban nature and vacancy, mobility and protest movements. In order to explore the spectrum of urban life, the painting students use various forms of artistic articulation and sound out boundaries to the sculptural, the installative, the performative and the cinematic. Regardless of their individual subjects, the works possess a lightness, send out a vibe in the swarm and whisper to you: big city, baby.
