The eighth and final exhibition in the programme series focuses on the total detachment of the human voice and its independent artificial imitation. v01ces is an exhibition about the (human) voice in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). The detachment of the human voice from the (human) body that produces it took place as early as 1877 with the invention of the phonograph, patented as a “speaking machine” by Thomas Alva Edison.

This development was already perceived as irritating and uncanny. Many voices are now artificially generated, but they still sound human. Current deepfake voices or “voice clones” go one step further by making voices say things that they have never said.

The artists in the exhibition v01ces draw a disturbing picture of the (human) voice in the age of AI from different perspectives.
