Almost 40 years after the exhibition “Das exotische Plakat” (“The Exotic Poster”) in 1987, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is showing an excerpt from its extensive poster collection with the political posters by Klaus Staeck from July 19, 2024.

The graphic artist, lawyer and activist Klaus Staeck has been dealing with issues such as the environment, consumption, war, migration, exploitation, identity and social imbalance in his political posters since the 1970s. The provocative text-image combinations of his posters appeal to the critical consciousness of the audience through irony and exaggeration in order to draw attention to grievances in our Western society.

The exhibition “Vorsicht Kunst!” (“Beware of Art!”) shows posters by Staeck from the 1970s to the 1990s in the Graphik-Kabinett and examines their relevance against the background of today’s social discourses. For the first time, a focus of the exhibition is on the posters, in which Staeck reinterprets classics of art history from Dürer to Manet or Lenbach and reassesses the function, impact and social role of art by transferring them to the mass medium of offset printing. Since the end of the 1960s, Klaus Staeck, together with other artists, including Joseph Beuys, has been campaigning for the freedom and democratization of art in various campaigns under the credo “Art does not take place in the hall.”
